Renaud, beyond performance

The Albert-Rousseau room could not have been more full to welcome Renaud and his show In my ropes. His entrance on stage had an effect. After a musical introduction with rich sounds, served by around ten musicians, the sacred monster of French song advanced amidst loud applause.

How is Quebec doing well? he said after the song 100 years, who opened the show. Renaud was happy to be there. He emphasized this from the outset, before adding: One day I would love to tour Canada, too.

His admirers who sing with him at regular intervals, who applaud him when he says he has not swallowed a drop of alcohol in three years, who beat the beat wildly during Stone merchantwere obviously waiting for him.

It must be said that Renaud returns to the National Capital after more than 15 years of absence, when he attracted a large and warm crowd, on the Plains of Abraham, during the Quebec Summer Festival, in 2007. Already, at that time, we could not ignore the artist’s voice problems.

Time passed and the voice did not improve. This evening, Renaud sings, pronouncing the words as best he can, or by stammering certain words. However, a kind of magic happens during this show. How to explain this? Its musicians and the musical arrangements of the show, which willingly take us into the gentle twirling of musette ball tunes or even somewhere in the splendor of the Irish landscapes, are magnificent. But there is more. The testimonies of love from his admirers are eloquent. Already, when they sing with him, it really works.

The resident of Quebec, Mylène Dugal, has been a great admirer of Renaud since 1984. It goes back to his beginnings on Quebec soil, in FEQ. The public fell in love with the man she considers more of a poet than a singer. Renaud then sang energetically Morgana from you, Song for Pierrot, My beau… by wearing his now legendary outfit: red bandana and perfecto.

To stop at the text and really read them and become aware of them, it was he who allowed me that because his texts are, in fact, poems put into songsunderlines Mylène Dugal.

Renaud’s voice, which has become raspy, does not bother her, at first glance, because, she adds: We come to live for a moment, and somewhere, it’s a goodbye that we say.

For Sébastien Auger: If we go to see the Renaud of recent years, it is not for the vocal performance. It’s an encounter with the man, the singer-songwriter who is, in my opinion, among the top, top, top of the French-speaking world and of all time, I could say. I know his songs all by heart. We’re not coming to entertain this evening. I think we’re coming to give this guy some love.

Sébastien Auger brought a souvenir book and a pencil. He has dreamed of meeting the artist for years: Of course I would love it. Just a word, an eye-to-eye look, that would bring happiness, that’s for sure.

For his part, Arthur traveled from Belgium to Quebec to attend four performances in the beautiful province.

He has always been my idol, and I have been an admirer for over 40 years. Here I am doing my 25th concert of the tour and my 105th concert overall. I made the trip because for me, it’s not far. For me, it hasn’t changed. He hasn’t aged. When you love someone, you love them for better and for worse.

Renaud offered a 2-hour show, revisiting 25 songs, including Germaine who really enlivened the audience, Morgana from you sung largely with his admirers, and the essential As soon as the wind blows.

Upon release, the feedback was very positive.

For me, Renaud is the greatest of the greats. I’m still super emotional. I cried the whole time. So it was perfectunderlines Noémie Fortier.

We see in the crowd the former programming director of the Quebec Summer Festival, Jean Beauchesne: It is very good. This is an extremely well-crafted show. It held up well, from start to finish. And, he even tells us that he’s going to make a new album, so he’s still there.

Very nice evening, it’s a singer who rocked my childhood. It was emotional. I cried and I will keep good memoriesunderlines Nans Bonnard, originally from Lyon.

This tour, which began in France at the start of 2023, now has more than 100 performances. A self-titled album from this tour has since been released. The famous songwriter and performer of Winner Mistral It covers several of the great hits of his career with the laborious elocution that is now his.

For my part, I will now be able to listen to this album, because it will remind me of this unforgettable show of May 21, 2024, in Quebec. Renaud was in good shape, knowing how to lead the crowd, and it was very nice!
