the essential
The 2024 season for monitoring and combating the tiger mosquito has been launched in Lot-et-Garonne.

The subject became a chestnut tree. Originally from Asia, the tiger mosquito continues to gain ground in France. 90% of the territory is now colonized. In New Aquitaine, it is active in eleven departments. And Lot-et-Garonne is not spared. To date, 129 municipalities (or 41% of the municipalities in the department) in the department are infested, according to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency. The last to have been classified as colonized by Aedes albopictus being the commune of Beauziac, in 2023.

Problem: in addition to being annoying, the tiger mosquito carries diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya or the zika virus. In 2023, eight imported cases of these three diseases were declared in Lot-et-Garonne. And since the start of the year in mainland France, an increase in cases of dengue fever has been observed. This “is partly explained by the epidemic situation in the Overseas Departments and Regions”, indicates the ARS.

Plan to fight diseases

For the Regional Health Agency, the fight against mosquitoes is becoming a priority, while according to Vigilance Moustique, the Olympic Games are “a Source of concern”. Thus, a vast surveillance campaign is being implemented throughout France and in the departments. In New Aquitaine, the 2024 action plan to combat vector-borne diseases was launched from May 1 until November. In Lot-et-Garonne, a network of 27 nesting traps has been deployed (which was already the case in previous years), notably at the tourist sites of Walygator in Roquefort, the Casteljaloux thermal baths, the Bonaguil castle in Saint- Front-sur-Lémance and Center Parcs in the Pindères/Beauziac communes, the Agen MIN in Boé and the department’s hospital sites.
