The French ambassador to Senegal said she was “honored” to have been received by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

Almost two months after the installation of the new Senegalese government, the ambassador of the French Republic in Dakar had, on Tuesday May 21, a first exchange with Ousmane Sonko. Christine Fages expressed her “honor” at having been able to speak face-to-face with the former leader of the Senegalese opposition, now Prime Minister after the Pastef party came to power last March.

According to the French diplomat, this first meeting was “ constructive and promising for the strengthening and renovation of the partnership between Senegal and France “.

Unlike their predecessors, the new Senegalese leaders, who claim to belong to the sovereignist and pan-Africanist camp, have still not gone to Paris. However, Ousmane Sonko, as president of Pastef, received last week in Dakar the leader of France Insoumise, a party of the French left.

The two men, who share convergent ideas on many issues with the exception of homosexuality, held a well-attended press conference at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.

Since his election, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reserved his first foreign trips to neighboring countries such as Mauritania, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Last week, he traveled to Abuja and Accra to meet his Nigerian and Ghanaian counterparts, with the aim of strengthening economic cooperation and African integration.

By receiving the President of the European Council in mid-April, Macky Sall’s successor explained to the former Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, the new dynamic focused on sovereignty and the win-win partnership that he wishes to establish in relations between Dakar and Europe.

It is true that cooperation with the European Union is dense and multifaceted. But together, we want to build a partnership rethought, renovated and enriched by a shared vision of a fairer international order, reflecting the realities of today’s world. », Underlined the 44-year-old Senegalese head of state.
