The Ukraine Peace Summit, which will take place in Bürgenstock (NW) on June 15-16, will attract numerous international heads of state and government. The Confederation has taken measures to ensure their safety.

The Ukraine Peace Summit will take place on June 15-16 at Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden. Volodymyr Zelensky, Olaf Scholz, Ursula von der Leyen and Giorgia Meloni will travel, as will the presidents of Poland, Finland and Latvia, among others.

Under public international law, Switzerland is required to ensure their security, the Federal Council recalled this Wednesday in a press release. To do this, Bern has taken a series of measures.

Air Police

First of all, the use of airspace will be temporarily restricted in the Bürgenstock region. This measure will last from June 13 at 8:00 a.m. to June 17 at 8:00 p.m., the government specifies in a press release.

The Air Force will provide air policing and enhanced airspace surveillance. The latter will be restricted for visual air traffic, for non-commercial instrument traffic and for aircraft without occupants.

4000 soldiers

At the same time, the Federal Council approved the subsidiary commitment of up to 4,000 soldiers in support of the Nidwalden authorities. The army will support the cantonal police by assuming tasks of object protection, surveillance, reconnaissance and logistics. It will also provide the canton of Nidwalden with equipment and vehicles.

These measures will complement the security measures put in place by the cantonal authorities. They should not result in additional expenses for the Confederation, notes the government.

Protection of the population

And to further emphasize that the number of soldiers engaged is explained by the configuration of the terrain and the scale of the missions requested, in particular the number of objects to be protected. Parliament must normally approve the commitment of the army during the following session, as long as the deployment includes more than 2,000 soldiers or lasts more than three weeks.

In the present case, the deadlines are too short for the Federal Council to present its message to the Chambers between now and the conference. He will give them a report for the fall session.

The Confederation will also make other contributions. Support will be given in terms of communications security, protection of the population and radiology or even protection against nuclear, biological or chemical incidents. The evolving situation regarding cyber threats will also be monitored. The Federal Intelligence Service will also be at work. (ats)
