INTERVIEW. “My only goal is to have fun”: Bigourdane Iris Soucaze will represent France during the World Ovinpiades

From May 25 to June 1, the World Ovinpiades will take place in France, in 5 different departments. This competition will designate the best shepherd in the world. The French representative will be Bigourdane Iris Soucaze, originally from Beaudéan. She confided in us as this big event approached.

How did you manage to qualify for these World Ovinpiades?

At the last agricultural show in Paris, I won the national Ovinpiades. I was voted best shepherdess in France. It was at that moment that I was informed of my qualification for this international competition.

What was your reaction to this announcement?

I didn’t expect it at all because I didn’t even think I would be able to win in Paris. I even thought I had missed certain tests. I was really surprised and moved.

What are your objectives for this “World Cup” of shepherds?

Unfortunately, I take the final exams for my BTS on the same dates as these Ovinpiades. So I don’t have any big ambitions, my studies remain my priority. I will give my best and do everything to achieve the best possible result, despite everything. My only goal is to have fun and enjoy the experience.

However, these events will take place in France and you will be one of the two national representatives. Do you feel any pressure?

No way. I am not particularly sensitive to stress and pressure. I approach the World Ovinpiades with the same state of mind as the national Ovinpiades: relaxed while hoping to put in the best possible performance.

6 events make up the World Ovinpiades. Do you have one or more favorite disciplines?

I’m pretty good at hoof trimming – care given to sheep to maintain the ends of their legs – we have animals at home so I’m the one who takes care of this task. On the other hand, I have never done mowing, it will be a challenge for me.

Are you passionate about agricultural competitions?

Passionate no. I did my first competition with a friend of mine. I had fun and I won so I continued.

What are your other personal projects?

I hope to obtain my BTS in May. I also aim to pass the ski instructor competition in the future. I could then combine my two passions, winter sports and agriculture.
