As you read these lines, Anatole Brunel has already traveled more than 1,600 km to reach Bielsko Biala, in Poland, where the second round of the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup is taking place, from May 17 to 19. . It was indeed after three preparation races in France and some great performances, that great news arrived on Tuesday, May 7 in the morning.

Anatole Brunel is selected for the French U19 team, a challenge for his last year as a junior. The timing is tight, but the young Refocalian athlete can count on his family, especially his dad, who supports him as best as possible by managing all the logistics required for each race.

The season began on the weekend of March 30 and 31, during which Anatole Brunel took part in the first round of the Occitanie Regional Cup, the Monkey DH in Millau. He performs his first game perfectly by placing 4e of its category U19 and 13e scratch (general classification of all runners). In the afternoon, a big driving error at the start of the track caused him to drop to 10e U19 and 28e scratch. “Some professional teams were present and the fight was good, especially with the 2023 U19 European champion Max Alran and a few other big names on the circuit,” says Laurent Brunel.

Anatole Brunel’s second race, April 6 and 7 for the first round of the Grand Est regional Cup in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, the descent of Les Roches. In the entry list: Loïc Bruni, five times world champion, the entire Commencal Dorval team and some World Cup drivers. It is in an atmosphere worthy of major international races that Anatole sets off.

“At the end of the first day, he held his place well with a 9e place U19 and 43e scratch. But during the night, a gust of wind destroyed our paddock and morale took a hit, regrets Laurent Brunel. The physique is average and the performance of the day before is not reproduced in the final. Anatole gets 12e place in its category and the 60the to the general. »

After a few days of necessary rest at the beginning of April, Anatole Brunel quickly returned to training and decided to participate in a third race, the third round of the Occitanie Regional Cup, the Camp de Cesar DH organized in Laudun l’Ardoise , the weekend of May 4 and 5. For the first race, Anatole placed 5e U19 and 11e scratch. “During the final, a pilot’s fall forced him to restart his descent. It’s not physically easy to last three minutes at more than 180 pulses,” explains Laurent Brunel. He finished at 6e place U19 and 16e scratch.

Physics and technology

“Anatole completed three great races on very different terrains, each time with a physical and technical commitment, which will allow us to face the next challenges with confidence. The winter work pays off,” rejoices his father. After Poland, it’s time for the season in the AuRA region with a first race on May 25 and 26 in Manigod in Haute-Savoie, followed by the AuRA championship in Cormaranche-en-Bugey. The first Coupe de France takes place at Arcs 1 600 on the last weekend of June. And to follow Anatole, it’s on the networks!
