A significant loss of production at EDF Réunion deprives 165,000 customers of electricity, other cuts to be expected

A significant loss of production led to a power outage in 165,000 households this Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 10 p.m. The re-powering is taking place gradually, but power interruptions are always to be expected.

At around 10 p.m. this Thursday, October 17, 2024, many Reunion Islanders observed a power cut. Several municipalities and neighborhoods were affected. “The whole island was affected“, confirms Dominique Charzat, the regional director of EDF Réunion.

According to EDF Réunion, this power cut is due to a sudden but significant loss of production. This forced them to carry out significant load shedding on the network, depriving 165,000 customers of electricity across the island. “Voluntary cuts to avoid a widespread cut in Reunion”explains Dominique Charzat.

Several power plant motors failed at the same time“, informs the regional director of EDF.

EDF services have undertaken a gradual resupply of customers, but outages are still expected in the hours to come. “Until we have fully diagnosed the origins of this outage, we will continue to have some power cuts of 2 hours maximum in all the municipalities of Reunion Island.“, warns Dominique Charzat of EDF Réunion.

Analyzes must be carried out to identify the causes of these engine failures.
