Elan Béarnais: must do better!

Vichy perfectly mastered the money-time of this return match at the Palais des Sports in Pau, qualifying in two dry sets. Already on the way out, without being at their best, they had kept the Béarnais at bay. The Elan thus falls during the first round of the playoffs, logically.

Against the Auvergne, Pau’s performance was like the season, full of ups and downs, with encouraging highlights followed by inconsistent periods. Enough to discourage at times the most loyal supporters of this legendary club. No wonder that for this decisive playoff match, only a little more than 4,000 spectators came.

It is clear that the sporting aspect did not at all live up to the ambitions displayed, especially with the biggest budget of Pro B: 5 million euros, double that of La Rochelle (N°1 of the regular season) and that of Vichy (N°2). Elan should have played the leading roles, but unfortunately this was never the case. We even feared the worst, at times, as the performances were so poor; a bit like the previous season, when Elan collapsed until being relegated to Pro B.

A reconsideration is necessary at the level of the sports staff to avoid major disappointments. After this first year in Pro B, Elan must display a completely different standard on the courts.

At the same time, the owner of Elan, Guillaume Berbinau, has undertaken to structure the club at different levels to enable it to strengthen its skills and resources in the long term. We can only wish him good success.
