Thanks to the ropes of success system, eight students in first class go for a week to Montpellier to discover medical studies.

They are barely 16 and 17 years old, but they already have their heads on their shoulders. Eight students from two high schools in Mayotte, that of the north and that of Dembeni, are leaving this Sunday, May 19 for Montpellier. For a week, they will be immersed in the world of medical studies at the University of Montpellier with students. “This trip will allow high school students to plan their careers in health studies, midwifery medicine, orthodontics and pharmacy”, explains Marie Trevisan, lecturer at the University of Mayotte and coordinator of the health access license, in the same establishment. The objective is to introduce them to the reality of health studies “in the hope of attracting them to the University of Mayotte to do the health access license, that they leave to continue their studies in mainland France, so that they then return to Mayotte to fill the problem of health personnel”, continues the teacher who accompanies the teenagers.

“This trip is a great honor”

Among the lucky ones, is Linda Saïd, a first year general student at the Lycée du Nord. “This trip is a great honor for me because there are not many people who have been selected,” she says. The young girl wants to be a doctor but does not yet know in what specialty. This week of discovery is an opportunity for her. “It will allow us to immerse ourselves in medical studies, to see the different sectors. This trip could help me make up my mind. » Same story for Krys’lann Labrune, first general student at Dembeni high school. “When I grow up I want to be a dentist or orthodontist. I think this trip will benefit me because we will be with more experienced students. »

The ropes of success

The main people concerned were not chosen at random. These are only general first year students who follow a “life and earth sciences” specialty. They benefit from the “Cordates of Success” system which is part of the policy of equal opportunities and development of courses of excellence of the Mayotte academy. “Its main objective is to fight against socio-cultural and territorial determinisms, self-censorship and to arouse the academic ambition of students”, explains the rectorate. This trip is organized by the University of Mayotte in partnership with that of Montpellier and the rectorate.
