A huge English aviation bomb dating from the Second World War was discovered in April 2024 in Calaisin the Fort-Nieulay district during road and sanitation works carried out on rue de Casablanca. A mine clearance operation will take place this Monday, May 20, we tell you everything you need to know.

Hundreds of residents evacuated and confined

Civil security deminers are expected this Monday to defuse the 500 kg machine. Two zones will be implemented. First, a evacuation zone, into which it will be strictly forbidden to enter, will be established from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. within a perimeter of 270 meters around the bomb. “The implementation of this scope will require the evacuation of 796 people“, indicates the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais.

Evacuees will be able to go, if they wish, to the Gambetta forum. “Shuttles will be set up from 7:30 a.m. to bring people to this room,” it is specified.

A containment zone will also be deployed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. within a perimeter of 400 meters around the bomb. In total, 635 residents will be confined. “Residents will have to keep their shutters closed and their windows open. In the absence of shutters, the windows will remain closed, but residents are invited to move away from them,” underlines the prefecture.

Obviously, no road or pedestrian traffic will be permitted while the deminers are working. “ All roads in Fort-Nieulay will be closed to traffic during operations. » Businesses and local residents will be contacted by the PCO (operational command post) to notify them of the start of the intervention.
