This Saturday, May 18, is marked by European Museum Night. The objectives of this event are to democratize access to culture and make the wealth of works present in regional museums accessible to all.

This 20th edition allows the public to go to the cultural sites of Reunion Island, at night, to take part in special activities such as guided tours, creative workshops, screenings and exhibitions and fun tours. It is also an opportunity to enjoy free concerts.

In total, for the European Night of Museums, around fifty events are planned this Saturday, May 18 in Reunion.

For example, guided or self-guided tours of the ground floor of the Maison de Madame Desbassayns in Villèle, guided tours of the remains of the long train at La Grande-Chaloupe, artistic performances at the Maison Carrère located on rue de Paris to Saint-Denis, or even immersive virtual visits within the polar patrol vessel L’Astrolabe in Saint-Pierre…

For those who do not have the opportunity to leave their homes, it is possible to visit virtual museums for free online.

The first advantage of the European Night of Museums is that entry is free. The meeting is also given at the art library in Saint-Denis, at the Stella Museum in Saint-Leu, or at the Maison du Volcan.

The time slot is wider than usual. Depending on the location, it is possible to stay at the museum until 10 p.m. or midnight. At the Léon Dierx Museum, for example, visitors will be able to enjoy visual and musical entertainment until midnight. The same goes for the Salt Museum. The artist Kénaëlle will be in concert at MAdoi in Saint-Louis.

There is something for all tastes, and even for the most curious. Taxidermy is in the spotlight this year at the headquarters of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF), located at 1 rue Gabriel Dejean, in Saint-Pierre.

In partnership with the Natural History Museum of Saint-Denis, the museum’s taxidermist will present the stages of taxidermy and the work carried out on the collection of species of animals and birds that exist in distant territories.
