Don’t call it Abbé-Pierre Square anymore. The Barcelonnette municipal council decided on Monday October 14 to rename this space located between the city center and Place Aimé-Gassier. The deliberation was adopted by majority. Mayor Yvan Bouguyon (Les Républicains) voted for; four councilors abstained.

Inaugurated in 2010

As a reminder, Henri Grouès alias Abbé Pierre was from his father’s side of Fouillouse, in Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye. Throughout his life, he returned there regularly. His name was given to the square in 2010, inaugurated in the presence of members of his family, the Church, the Emmaüs movement and the Abbé-Pierre foundation.

Since the revelation of the numerous sexual assaults he allegedly committed, several places bearing his name have been renamed in .

The elected officials of Barcelonnette will meet later to decide on another name for the square.
