Sequestration, torture and ransom demand: a network dismantled in Rabat

The criminal chamber at the Rabat Court of Appeal has been ruling since last Monday on the case of a criminal gang made up of five members accused of kidnapping, sequestration and demand for ransom as well as assault and battery resulting in disability permed.

In fact, the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) of Casablanca was informed of the kidnapping and sequestration of an Arab investor, reports Assaba from Friday May 17. BNPJ investigators managed to locate the suspects thanks to telephone communications between the cities of Casablanca, Rabat and Salé. The main accused was arrested in a cafe in Rabat after fiercely resisting the police while his accomplice was apprehended near his home.

The third accused, brother of one of the accused, was found, after investigation, to also be involved in this affair. BNPJ investigations revealed that the main cause of this kidnapping concerns real estate worth 5 million dirhams acquired by an Arab national to carry out an investment project. After giving an advance of 300,000 dirhams to the seller, the operation collapsed due to violations of town planning rules. The seller was forced to sign an acknowledgment of debt after the Arab national took the matter to the Salé Magistrate’s Court which ruled in his favor.

But the “fictitious” seller demanded the investor’s withdrawal in return for checks in the amount of 1.5 million which had been given to him as guarantee. The Arab national allegedly asked the main accused to intervene with the seller to resolve this problem amicably. They met in a cafe but things quickly escalated, says Assaba.

The buyer was kidnapped, sequestered and tortured with the complicity of an official. He lost an eye. The main accused subsequently forced the victim to sign several documents and took away the keys to his car which contained bank cards and administrative documents relating to this real estate dispute. The suspect also forced the victim to contact her cleaning lady so that she could hand over her luxury watches to an individual who turned out to be an official.
