The Crew beats CF Montreal at Stade Saputo

The Columbus Crew was at Stade Saputo on Wednesday to face CF Montreal, and the visitors beat the locals by a score of 3-1.

Victor Wanyama was in the Bleu-blanc-noir starting lineup for the first time this season in MLSwhile CF Montreal found its ex-coach Wiflried Nancy, now head of Crewand Rudy Camacho, traded to Columbus last year.

In the first half, Ariel Lassiter missed a golden opportunity in the 11th minute. The CFM left-back, well placed to receive a cross from Sunusi Ibrahim, found himself alone against goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, but he missed the target with an uncrossed shot.

Missed opportunities often end up backfiring. In the 20th minute, Max Arfsten sent the Crew forward, taking advantage of a favorable rebound to score the first goal of the match.

It’s up to me to find the formulas to discern a little better the phases of play and the preparation of the teamsaid CFM head coach Laurent Courtois. The difficult times we go through help me identify my team and get to know the players better. I must review my assessment, and adapt to the individualities that I have at hand.

Five minutes later, Christian Ramirez deceived Sirois with a half-volley from the left sent straight into the top corner. A magnificent goal which placed the Crew firmly in the driver’s seat… until the action is reviewed on video assistance, and the decision is overturned for offside.

The opportunity was great for CF Montreal to get back into the match, first with defensive efforts to limit the damage, then with a penalty shot converted by Mathieu Choinière in the 45th + 3, won on a nice Joaquin Sosa’s race.

Both teams returned to the locker room with a score of 1-1.

In the second half, it only took 15 minutes for the Crew to regain the lead. Their counter-attack allowed them to cross the entire field at speed, Diego Rossi pushing the ball deep on a pass from Christian Ramirez, who had been shifted to the right after the rise in the middle of defender Steven Moreira.

In the 75th minute, 17-year-old Alessandro Biello made his first appearance in MLS, while his father Mauro, the only player whose jersey has been retired in the history of the club, was in the stands. A moment that delighted the crowd gathered at Stade Saputo.

But it is the Crew who celebrated at the end of the match, nailing the coffin of CF Montreal in the 89th minute with a third goal, the work of Marino Hinestroza, with a flat foot sent into the side net from the penalty spot.

This is a fifth game in a row without a victory for the Impact in MLS. This is also the third time in as many matches in the North American circuit that the Montreal eleven has allowed at least 3 goals.
