The mobilization continues in the prisons of Isère, in Varces and Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, two days after the attack on a prison van in Normandy, which caused the death of two agents. The unions denounce the lack of recurring means for these transfers of prisoners. This is also the case in Isère. “There is an understaffing” in Grenoble, recognizes Thierry Azema, president of the investigating chamber of the Grenoble Court of Appeal.

There is an undervaluation, in our region there are difficulties, staff shortages“, deplores the magistrate. “For example, for the investigating judges of Grenoble, there were 138 judicial extractions carried out in 2023, but also 60 which could not be carried out due to a lack of agents.“.

The unions are calling for the use of armored vehicles, unmarked vans to avoid becoming “targets”, and appropriate weaponry against attackers equipped with “weapons of war”. They also ask for an increase in videoconferences to limit the extraction of detainees. “Videoconferencing is now practiced, but there are several difficulties: firstly material difficulties because not all remand centers necessarily have a sufficient number of videoconference rooms“, explains Thierry Azema. “There is also a legal difficulty because in certain cases the detainee can refuse the videoconference, it is his right“.
