Farea of the Education League “the citizen’s factory”. This desire, desired by Jean Macé, French teacher and journalist of the 19the century, founder of this network of associations, still infuses in the minds of his heirs.

In the Landes, the Education League celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2024e birthday. The opportunity to highlight fundamental values such as citizenship, secularism and even democracy. “Our country needs popular education and its emancipatory role more than ever in a society riddled with various uncertainties,” argues Arlette Tapiau-Dangla, president.

With more than 200 affiliated associations and 12,000 members, the Education League aims to be the standard of humanist values. “Any type of association can join the League after passing before the board of directors. Once the charter is signed, the structure remains independent and free,” explains Patrice Fernandez, departing general director. Looking for support or specific support, the motivations for being part of this network of associations are diverse.

“For some, it’s an opportunity to feel a little less alone. » With around twenty full-time equivalents, or even around thirty during active periods, the Education League can help these structures put together a budget, create a file to obtain subsidies or do association accounting.

“Voting is important”

Aware of the evolution of society, the League has identified some strong areas which could be the subject of the 2025-2030 federal project. The ecological transition, gender equality and democracy are among the major subjects. In light of the European elections on June 9, the League also played a role in “voter training”. “Voting is important. It is necessary for citizens to reclaim this democracy and understand the issues,” underlines Laurent Darmaillacq, future director general.

“Any type of association can join the League after passing before the Board of Directors. Once the charter has been signed, the structure remains independent and free,” explains Patrice Fernandez.

Thoughts that come to fruition during events like Les Jeunes neo-Aquitaines get involved. A meeting created in 2007 by the Aquitaine Education League and its five departmental federations. This year, it will take place from October 18 to 20 in Cassen. “Through workshops, the objective is to get them to think about a theme. It will be social justice. At the end of these discussions, elected officials from the region will come and collect their ideas,” indicates Patrice Fernandez.

The arrival of young people in the Teaching League is most of the time thanks to projects. As can be the case with junior associations. “This encourages the grouping of minors, whether in school or not, around an idea or a desire,” explains Arlette Tapiau-Dangla.

Give people a taste for reading

On the cultural side, live performances and books occupy a significant part of the collaborations. The Read and Make Read system is an example of this. “Volunteers over 50 have the mission of giving groups of children a taste for reading,” says Patrice Fernandez. In 2018, 850 children were able to benefit from this system in 22 schools concerned. For the live performance part, Rencontres en Grande Lande and Rêv’enScène contribute to providing access to culture throughout the territory.

In this same vein, digital technology is also one of the emerging issues. To meet this demand, the Education League has developed Le Comptoir de l’Éducation populaire. A place to live in which cooperation is the key word. “We have escape games, but also board games and video games. » Behind these activities, the desire is to train young people “in the values of the Republic”.

Faced with “the changes in our society”, the Education League continues its mobilization to “build society”. With in mind, the desire to perpetuate this quote from Jean Macé, displayed on their premises. “Make those who don’t think think, make those who don’t act act, make men and citizens. »
