Riots in New Caledonia: according to Victorin Lurel, “the withdrawal of the text to find the path to dialogue”

Violence has escalated in New Caledonia. Three people were killed in another night of riots: the gendarme who was shot and died from these injuries. The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency council at the Elysée and a state of emergency was established in the territory. This social and political situation in New Caledonia is therefore at the center of the debates. Victorin Lurel, senator from Guadeloupe, persists and signs: “the withdrawal of the text to find the path to dialogue”.

Another day of violence and fires took place in Nouméa. This Wednesday, thick smoke covered Nouméa and Greater Nouméa, many stores burned last night. The streets are deserted and some roads blocked by burned cars.

As a reminder, before the vote of deputies on a constitutional revision decried by the separatists, the French archipelago in the South Pacific has been the scene for 24 hours of altercations, looting of stores, burning of houses and shootings on the forces of the order.

Wednesday took a dramatic turn in New Caledonia:

  • The Elysée announces a state of emergency.
  • A gendarme seriously injured by gunfire died last night, according to a gendarmerie Source.
  • Gabriel Attal will propose a meeting date for stakeholders “in the coming hours”.
  • At least 130 people were arrested for the second night riots, which left around sixty police officers injured.
  • The stores have been stormed since this morning. Many gas stations have closed.
  • The text on the thawing of the electorate was adopted at 351 votes for and 153 against.

Victorin Lurel, senator from Guadeloupe, reacted in a press release and was clear:

The real state of emergency is now to avoid civil war by making the withdrawal of the constitutional reform bill – which today takes the form of an ultimatum – a prerequisite for a necessary resumption of dialogue between the parties and to a reconstruction of a common destiny.

According to him, “the state of emergency will not resolve the question of politics, identity and independence.”

We forget one thing in the affair: there were agreements in Matignon and Nouméa and there was peace and harmony for 40 years. We forget that we are in a process of decolonization. However, this process, for 7 years, has been brutalized with a referendum boycotted by 57% of the electorate.
