On June 9, young people aged 16 and 17 will be able to vote for these Europeans, while the right to vote for other levels of power is 18 years old. To raise awareness among students in the schools under its supervision, the Province therefore had the idea of ​​a debate with the heads of the list of the six French-speaking political parties. All these leaders responded to the call: Elio Di Rupo (PS), Sophie Wilmès (MR), Marc Botenga (PTB), Yvan Verougstraete (Les Engagés), Saskia Bricmont (Écolo) and Fabrice Van Dorpe (DéFI).

90 seconds to respond

The session started a little after 10 a.m. with introductory words from the president of the provincial college, Tanguy Stuckens (MR), as well as the provincial deputy in charge of Education, Isabelle Evrard (PS). Then, the RTL journalist in charge of the animation, Simon François, brought all the political representatives onto the stage. Thunderous applause and whistles in the room! Each of them had a desk in the colors and logo of their party. First task of the day: briefly present his political career.

Then, serious things started. The rules ? Answer young people’s questions within 90 seconds, plus a bonus of 30 seconds to conclude or expand on a program point. The questions were asked by the young people themselves. They had been the subject of prior preparation. Six themes were thus selected: mobility and energy, youth employment, democracy and the rise of populism, migration, Europe and finally gender rights (LGBTQIA +) and human rights. Each time he spoke, a timer was displayed on a giant screen. Like speed dating…
