Emotion and dignity dominate in front of the entrance to the Lons-le-Saunier remand center this Wednesday, May 15. The day after the attack on a prison convoy in Eure, which occurred late Tuesday morning, the prison guards mobilized to pay tribute to the victims. Two guards were killed, three others injured, after the attack by a heavily armed commando who came to free a detainee transported in the van.

Operation “dead prison”

Early this morning, a blockade was launched at the Lons-le-Saunier remand center. Around twenty supervisors gathered in front of the main access and received a visit from the prefect of Jura, Serge Castel. “There is a very strong mobilization,” says Yannick Michaud, local secretary for Ufap-Unsa. Around 80-85% of personnel are participating and those who were on duty today took part in the movement in solidarity. The event had a huge impact on the profession and French prisons reacted. Since this morning, it has been a dead prison, there is no movement inside,” he added.

The difficulties and dangers of the profession

Generally speaking, trade unionists want to emphasize the difficulties and dangers posed by prisoner transfers. “There is an urgent need to significantly reduce judicial extractions, knowing that they can be done by videoconference from the cells during court hearings. More broadly, we need a radical policy change at the level of the prison administration. We have to be there to ensure the safety of citizens, but we have difficulty ensuring our own! », continued Laurent Boitrand, deputy general secretary of the Ufap-Unsa union in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. “There is great unease today. We are in mourning and the emotion is strong,” he added.
