In the wake of those from Lausanne and Geneva, Friborg students occupied a UniFR building this Monday. Among them was Gérald Collaud, professor of teaching and research in computer science. “I sat down to clearly show my support for this action”, he assumes, in “La Liberté”. According to him, his status as a teacher is unimportant in this context. “It is normal and human to support action to denounce this ethically horrible situation. But these are private opinions, which only concern me and not my employer or even the State,” believes the teacher and general councilor of the City of Fribourg.

Basically, the University believes that “the members of its academic staff are free, even encouraged, to express themselves publicly” and they have the right to “provide their support” to the occupiers. In terms of form, however, there is a catch: “The occupation of these premises contravenes university order and security,” recalls the UniFR. In any case, the institution does not provide for sanctions, because officially it is not aware of the participation of teachers in the occupation. Furthermore, “Liberty” explains that, among other demands, the demonstrators demand the removal of a commemorative plaque dedicated to Chaim Weizmann, former president of Israel and doctoral student at Unifr in 1899.
