Switzerland is playing its skin in the Nations League this Saturday in Leskovac (8:45 p.m.). Act III of Serbia – Switzerland risks being as fierce as the first two in Kaliningrad and Doha.
Beaten by Denmark and Spain, Switzerland cannot afford a third defeat in a row in this group stage of the League of Nations. It would practically be synonymous with relegation to League B even if the precedent of 2022 is the exception which confirms the rule. Switzerland had ensured its survival at the expense of the Czech Republic after losing its first three matches.
After being dominated by Switzerland during the last two World Cups, Serbia remains in a failed Euro 2024 with an inglorious elimination in the first round. Despite the talent of their individuals, the Serbs never cease to disappoint.
Players on the grill
Switzerland, on the other hand, won many hearts this summer in Germany. In Leskovac, Murat Yakin and his players must however be forgiven for the two defeats in September. Without Yann Sommer, without Fabian Schär and without Xherdan Shaqiri, three players who have not – yet – really been replaced, the Swiss will have to raise the cursor.
We think first of Gregor Kobel, who still conceded six goals in his first two games as No. 1. Also of Nico Elvedi who would not have regained starting status on Saturday if Denis Zakaria had been able to hold its place. To Zeki Amdouni, whom Murat Yakin holds in great esteem and who must truly assert himself as, like Xherdan Shaqiri, a player capable of playing between the lines to cause imbalance. And finally to Breel Embolo, whose performance in Copenhagen was too distressing to be true…
