(Keystone-ATS) In 2023, 19% of Swiss arable land, vineyards and market gardening areas will be farmed without using herbicides. The first results on the new direct payment programs are encouraging, announces the Confederation.

At the start of 2023, the Federal Council launched new optional programs linked to direct payments. The goal is to halve the risks linked to the use of phytosanitary products by 2027.

These programs had effects from the first year: farmers exploited 19% (or 53,000 ha) of arable land, vineyards and market gardening areas without using herbicides, the Federal Office of Agriculture indicated on Tuesday. The withdrawal of certain plant protection products has, however, created significant gaps in plant protection.

The Confederation paid a total of 260 million francs in 2023 as contributions to the production system. This amount corresponds to approximately 10% of the direct payment credit.
