Consumption of alcohol, tobacco and new nicotine products is stagnating among Friborg residents aged between 11 and 15. Based on the “Health Behavior in School-aged Children” (HBSC) study carried out in 2022 by Addiction Suisse, the Department of Health and Social Affairs (DSAS) believes that risky behavior is still too widespread for this part of the population. It therefore wishes to strengthen its prevention measures.

The results show that 21.2% of girls and 20.3% of boys aged 15 used an electronic cigarette at least once in the 30 days preceding the survey. Compared to respectively 16.1% and 10.9% for traditional cigarettes. “However, this does not represent a significant change compared to the previous reading of 2018,” notes the DSAS in a press release. Note that the use of disposable electronic cigarettes (puffs) has not been specifically documented.

New program

Regarding alcohol, the HSBC study shows that nearly 23% of 15-year-olds in the canton have drunk five or more alcoholic drinks at least once on the same occasion in the last 30 days.

These occasional excesses called binge drinking feature as a priority in the new Cantonal Alcohol Action Program (PCAA) 2024-2028. Accepted in March by the Council of State, it proposes 14 measures “covering both aspects of prevention and management of problematic alcohol consumption”. Note that there is also a cantonal tobacco prevention program (PCPT).

The Public Health Service and CIPRET Friborg are organizing a half-day of discussions for professionals on May 16. It will allow them to discuss “the issues and possible responses to the problems highlighted by the study”. Elodie Fessler
