Montreal SPCA: you can adopt an animal for $0 for a single day in October

If you want to find a loyal friend for life, know that the Montreal SPCA is actively looking for foster families to adopt more than 120 pets at its shelter this October. And you could give a better life to these little balls of abandoned fur during the last free adoption day of 2024.

For several years, the SPCA has been facing an abandonment crisis that “seems to never end”. “It is always difficult to find accommodation if you live with an animal, especially a dog, and access to veterinary care is difficult for the families most affected by the rising cost of living,” laments Laurence Massé , general director of the Montreal SPCA, in a press release sent to the media.

Many animals, including more than 70 cats, 18 dogs, around twenty small animals, around fifteen birds and nine rabbits are waiting for you to be welcomed with love.

What you need to know: The event will take place next Monday, October 14, during Thanksgiving, regardless of the weather.

The public should prepare for a long queue, so it is in your best interest to bring water, snacks, a folding chair, an umbrella and a coat for the occasion.

Those interested in adopting must bring identification and a safe, suitable carrier, or bring a leash for the dogs.

Please note that all animals offered for adoption have been examined by a veterinarian. Dogs and cats are sterilized, microchipped, have received treatment against parasites, their first basic vaccination as well as that against rabies (in the case of dogs). The rabbits were also sterilized.

In case you didn’t know: For a successful adoption, the SPCA recommends planning for the costs associated with caring for an animal. This annual sum is around $2,400 for a cat, between $2,700 and $3,400 for a dog and around $1,500 for a rabbit, according to the Association of Veterinary Doctors of Quebec (AMVQ).
