Long weekend of May 8: full success for Marne and Ardennes tourism

A radiant sun and a long five-day weekend, all that was needed to attract tourists to the Marne and the Ardennes. It is still a little early to draw up figures, but one thing is certain, traders are smiling.

The terraces of bars and restaurants were full, from Wednesday to Sunday, particularly in Reims, where “Belgians, Italians, English, Germans stayed two days on average”, explains the president of Vitrines de Reims, the association of Reims traders. And he notices that this magnificent sun pushed them to consume more, and for a longer period of time than usual.

“The majority of my colleagues from Place d’Erlon, Place du Forum and the surrounding area worked very well, says Vincent Mansencal. There were also people in the shops, especially the clothing ones.” Himself at the head of a brasserie, Le Lion, place d’Erlon, he now hopes that “spring will set in well and summer will arrive quite quickly”.

The morale of restaurateurs is picking up, after “seven difficult months”

Long-term sunny days are also what the president of the UMIH des Ardennes, the Union of Hotel Trades and Industries, hopes for. This weekend, in Charleville-Mézières, Givet or even Sedan, where the 27th edition of the medieval festival was held, the tourists were there.

François Béguin notes a “very good weather for filling the hotels”, and it feels good, after the “seven difficult months” which have just passed, recalls the president of the UMIH in the Ardennes, “between the bad weather, the overly expensive heaters, we had a lot of constraints.”

The president of the UMIH des Ardennes also points out a “lack of employees” still screaming. François Béguin launches a call to all those who would like to obtain a position as a cook or waiter. “It’s not a difficult job, but you have to love this job,” he says.
