As of 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, the police received several calls for disorder around the Patro de Charlesbourg. Officers from the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) found a gathering of “a few hundred young people” there.

The police warned the participants who were consuming alcohol and dispersed the crowd, but the situation degenerated and reinforcements were called around 8:45 p.m.

“On site, young people consumed alcoholic beverages, fireworks were launched and some young people were fighting,” indicates Pierre-Olivier Lévesque, spokesperson for the SPVQ.

In order to secure the premises, the patrol officers then arrested a young person in connection with a violation of municipal regulations.

It was at this moment that the crowd of young people surrounded the police vehicle and attacked them. “Insults and various objects” were thrown towards the car and the officers inside.

At one point, the crowd was so “hostile” that the police used pepper spray, says the SPVQ.

Paramedics also responded to the scene during the evening to treat cases of alcohol and other substance intoxication.

A 15-year-old boy arrested

While they were surrounded by the mass of participants, a 15-year-old teenager “directly confronted” the patrol officers on board his scooter by blocking the path of their vehicle. The teenager “went so far as to lean his moped on the front of the patrol vehicle,” explains Officer Lévesque.

The 15-year-old then went to the driver’s side window to attack the police and insult them. The teenager was arrested for obstructing police officers. He also received notices of violation of the road safety code.

He was released to his parents in the evening.

Several complaints

In addition to the numerous calls for this event at the Patro de Charlesbourg, the SPVQ intervened in several other gatherings which sparked complaints of disorder from citizens during the evening.

“The SPVQ wishes to remind our young people that respecting the regulations and calm are essential when going out with friends,” insists Pierre-Olivier Lévesque.
