Since Thursday and until Sunday, Neuchâtel will host 54 children and youth choirs from all over Switzerland. More than 1,500 young people aged 10 to 25 will perform in churches, at the Littoral ice rink, on boats from the LNM navigation company and in various other indoor or outdoor venues in the city.

The SKJF festival takes place every two years. The last one was held in Winthertour (ZH). This is the second time that the event has stopped in French-speaking Switzerland, the first being in 2011 in Lausanne. Most performances are free.

The youth choirs, which perform in Neuchâtel, represent diverse musical styles, ranging from yodeling to pop. A flashmob will also be held near the Fountain of Justice on Saturday at noon with an extract from Carmina Burana.

Neuchâtel, “epicenter of choral life”

The young singers are housed in gymnasiums in Littoral colleges, Arcinfo said. They sleep on camping mattresses, which they brought themselves. All the choir members come by train and their meals are vegetarian. Water fountains are also provided for participants.

“If 2024 makes the city of Neuchâtel the national epicenter of choral life, it prepares the canton for another national event in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 2027: the first Swiss cultural capital. There too, art and culture will promote exchange between linguistic regions, questioning our being in the world and the multiple ways of responding to it”, explained Marie-Thérèse Bonadonna, head of the Neuchâtel Culture Service on the festival site.
