As we have been informed in recent days, the prefect of Manche has banned, by prefectural decree, any “unauthorized festive gathering of a musical nature” from May 7 to 13, 2024 throughout the department.

These often undeclared gatherings, called rave parties, free parties or even teknivals, bring together thousands of “teufeurs” around techno culture every year, across the four corners of France.

“Long weekend” and “background”

Was such a gathering being prepared in the Channel? When requested, the Manche prefecture specified that orders of this type had already been issued in the past “as soon as we were aware of information on a possible event of this type in the department”. She explains that she made this decision “taking into account the long weekend” and the “history of rave parties in the department at this time”.

The circulation of “any vehicle transporting amplified music broadcasting equipment intended for an unauthorized festive gathering of a musical nature” is also prohibited on all Channel roads.

Demonstration in Cherbourg

A month earlier, around a hundred “teufeurs” demonstrated in the streets of Cherbourg to defend their freedom to gather and denounce “the repressive means” of the State.

“The techno movement is in decline,” explained Quentin, one of the organizers, in our columns. There is too much repression when we come together. Prefectural decrees systematically rain down on our events. What we want is more flexibility in the law, it is to be recognized as a culture and a movement, it is more gatherings around techno music. There are too many reprimands, too many seizures of equipment during free parties. »

Supported that day locally by the Drak’hard Events association, this demonstration responded to the national call to march throughout France from the Tekno Anti Rep collective. The organizers of the Cherbourg demonstration did not wish to comment on this new prefectural decree. “It’s the same as usual…” they regret.
