In the general classification, Pogacar widens the gap overall and is 2:36 ahead of the Colombian Felipe Martinez (Bora-hansgrohe) who takes second place ahead of the British Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), 3rd at 2:46.

The Slovenian won the 72nd victory of his career, the eighth of his season and the second on this Giro after winning the 2nd stage.

Setting off like a rocket, Filippo Ganna quickly caught up with several riders including the Frenchman Ewen Costiou (Arkéa – B&B Hotels) who started two minutes before him and the Kazakh Vadim Pronskiy (Astana Qazaqstan) who started three minutes earlier. Leading for a long time, Ganna was finally beaten by Pogacar who, despite being 47 seconds behind at the time of the second intermediate time trial, gave everything on the climb to finish 17 seconds ahead of the Italian.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike) had to settle for a 17th time in this time trial. A performance which dropped him to 7th place in the general classification at 3:50 and which also made him lose his white jersey for best young person to the benefit of the Australian Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla).

The 8th stage will be held on Saturday between Spoleto and Prati di Tivo over 152 kilometers. A mountain stage which will include multiple climbs including three passes: Forca Capistrello (2nd cat., 16.4km at 5.6%), Croce Abbio (3rd cat., 8.1km at 4.7%) and the Prati di Tivo (1st category, 14.6km at 7%).
