Late Friday afternoon, on Quai Ernest-Ansermet, in the city of Geneva, a “very virulent” fire broke out, in the words of First Lieutenant Nicolas Millot, communications officer for the Fire and Rescue Department. emergency aid (SIS). “When we arrived, flames and black smoke were escaping from the apartment located on the 11th floor of a building which has 13.”

At 5 p.m., firefighters received around thirty calls reporting the fire. Six vehicles including an ambulance and 25 professional firefighters were sent to the scene. “The police, firefighters and emergency services are fighting the fire which is spreading quickly and which has already reached the upper floor,” confirms a witness. “The fire was attacked by a hose inside the building and by another outside on a large scale,” specifies the SIS spokesperson.

The occupants of the apartment managed to leave the premises on their own. “I was sleeping when, suddenly, the neighbors knocked on my door shouting: ‘There’s fire on your balcony.’ I was able to go out with my 14-year-old daughter, while the flames were reaching the living room,” says the father, safe and sound but visibly very moved.

It is currently impossible to know with certainty whether all the residents of the building were able to be evacuated. “The human toll is currently being evaluated,” says Nicolas Millot. As for the causes of the disaster, the police investigation will have to determine them.
