Chlorine poisoning in Ille-et-Vilaine: this new swimming pool closed until further notice

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. this Thursday, May 9, at the AquaVallons swimming pool in Guichen, south of Rennes. While around fifty people took advantage of the public holiday to relax in the water, chlorine fumes caused the evacuation of the complex.

A major rescue system was dispatched to the site with more than forty firefighters, including a unit specializing in chemical risks. Several SAMU 35 vehicles were also present on the scene.

Pump problem?

In total, 33 people were treated by emergency services for nausea and respiratory irritation. Six of them were transported to hospital for further assessment. “Fortunately, the symptoms of poisoned people are not serious,” reassures a firefighter present on the scene.

“An order to close the swimming pool will be issued until further notice,” indicates Dominique Delamarre, mayor of Guichen. “If the release of chlorine is likely linked to a technical failure of a pump, we must understand what happened so that it does not happen again.” This incident comes barely a week after the inauguration of the swimming pool.
