SENEGAL-FLOODS-PREVENTION / Fatick: strengthening of the flood control system – Senegalese press agency

Fatick, May 7 (APS) – The prefect of the department of Foundiougne, Ousseynou Mbaye, announced Tuesday, measures intended to strengthen the means and materials of the flood control system in the region of Fatick (central-west), in perspective of wintering.

“We are going to strengthen material resources such as motor pumps, while cleaning the gutters,” he said, during a regional development committee (CRD) focused on the identification of flood-prone areas of the Fatick region.

“We are going to build essential infrastructure to facilitate the evacuation of rainwater,” added Mr. Mbaye, who came to chair this meeting on behalf of the regional governor.

The regional head of the Senegal National Sanitation Office (ONAS), Moussa Guèye, reported that a rainwater evacuation system is being installed, pending the arrival of the first big rains”.

In an interview with the APS, at the beginning of May, the vshead of the climatology and climate services department of the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM), Diabel Ndiaye, announced a “cumulative excess of normal” precipitation over the period from August until in September.

“We are in the process of installing a top-notch drainage system before the arrival of the first heavy rains but also cleaning the gutters and carrying out sanitation works,” reassured.

He recalled that several neighborhoods in the commune of Fatick were heavily affected by flooding during the 2022 winter season.

“We had recorded rains never experienced by the city for decades”, he added, calling “to necessarily take appropriate measures this year to deal with possible floods”.

Mr. Guèye assured that ONAS had learned all the lessons from this difficult period, from the winter that year.

Several heads of regional services took part in this meeting, which was held at the Fatick governance.
