On May 8, the anniversary of the German capitulation, France Bleu Normandie is launching the broadcast of its “Operation Veterans” podcasts. 15 classes from the Normandy rectorate worked on portraits of little-known or completely unknown veterans of the Battle of Normandy.

France today commemorates the 79th anniversary of the armistice, the German capitulation signed on May 8, 1945. A date that France Bleu Normandie wanted to be symbolic, to launch the broadcast of its “Operation Veterans” podcasts. 5 classes from the Normandy rectorate, from the 5 departments, around 400 middle and high school students, worked on portraits of little-known or completely unknown veterans of the landing and the Battle of Normandy. ONACVG is one of the partners of Operation Veterans. Its director in Calvados is Thomas Pouty, who is committed to transmitting history to young people.

“Memory only has meaning if it is transmitted”

Young people: this has been the memorial issue of commemorations for several years now. “Memory only has meaning if it is transmitted in a general way, all commemorations are oriented towards the passing of the baton, towards the passing of the values which guided both the fighters of these eras, but also the testimonies civilian casualties of this war for the period was extremely difficult and painful“We must not forget and not fall into a form of angelism, warns the director in Calvados of the ONACVG who sees in these testimonies”a vector of transmission with stories from people who were the same age as these students, so it particularly affects them“.**

Dust off the ceremonies to attract young people

At each ceremony, its always very codified protocol recognizes the director in Calvados of the ONACVG who still insists on spaces of freedom left to the organizers. Which makes it possible to enhance these ceremonies.with testimonies, contextual elements which allow us to recreate the link between young people and their territory“The office for combatants and victims of war also carries out training work.”with educational establishments, but with elected officials“. And the message is clear: to restore meaning to these ceremonies, “even in small villages, we must highlight both the historical and cultural heritage, the local heroes in quotes, to recreate the link with this young generation“. And it works assures Thomas Pouty: “we find this dynamic which makes it possible to mobilize the students of the first level, of the second level, of the second level by making them actors during these ceremonies through historical evocations, texts, poems, songs“.
