A head-on collision between two cars occurred around 3 p.m. Friday on Highway 20 between Montée Industrielle-et-Commerciale and Avenue du Père-Nouvel in Rimouski.

Three people were involved in this accident and they were transported to the hospital center, reports the Sûreté du Québec.

One person suffered serious injuries, but there is no fear for their life. Two people were trapped inside the vehicle and were extricated.

According to the Sûreté du Québec, one of the two drivers lost control of his car while trying to avoid another vehicle that was coming into his lane while attempting to overtake.

Police officers were on site to clarify the circumstances surrounding the events.

Highway 20 was closed to traffic in both directions, and it was reopened early Friday evening.

More than 1,200 accidents were recorded on Highway 20 between Mont-Joli and Rimouski between 2000 and 2022, including 25 fatal collisions.

A coroner also recommended widening Highway 20 to four lanes after the death last year of a motorist on this section.

For its part, Quebec is not closing the door to this option, without however committing to widening the highway. Adding passing lanes is another possibility being explored.
