The snow to be cleared is much more abundant than last year.

A TF1 team followed the impressive operations underway at Cormet de Roselend.

You have to make your way through this white expanse. At 1,800 meters above sea level, without any visibility, Pierre-Yvan Canova, roads agent in Beaufortain (Savoie), has no choice. To guide the machine, he must probe the snow. “We are trying to find the road. There, we are on it compared to the noise we have on the probe“, he explains in the TF1 1 p.m. report above. The only markings are a few tree branches planted in the snow. “This is to show the edge of the road” to the snow blower which is working to clear the passage, he continues.

These department agents started snow removal from Cormet de Roselend a week ago. Long-term work; it takes them almost an hour to clear 50 meters of snow. With the wind, the snowdrifts reach up to four meters high, enough to make you feel very small underneath. “This year, at this altitude, we have more snow than last year. The bad weather we had from November to December, from 1,800 meters above, it was snow, that’s why there is a high accumulation“, underlines Nicolas Chatel, road maintenance manager.

In his snow blower, Renaud Landon saw his first pass opening, a mixture of pride and pleasure. “You have to love the mountains. We’re good, we’re alone in the world, we’re opening“, he comments. At almost 2,000 meters above sea level, the Cormet de Roselend should be accessible to cars, bicycles and motorbikes before the end of the month.
