Five years that access to care consultations have existed in Vendee. They are intended to welcome people with chronic pathologies and social vulnerabilities, but who do not have a treating doctor.

“A unique system in France”, born from a exemplary cooperation between the department of general medicine, the departmental hospital center (CHD) and the regional health agency (ARS).

“Since the launch of the operation, 2,725 people have been seen during more than 8,000 consultations,” explains Romain Bossis, doctor and vice-president of the Professional Territorial Health Community (CPTS) of Center-Vendée.

Interns take care of patients

The particularity of this device lies in the fact that patients are welcomed at the CHD by interns in their ninth year of medicine at the University of Nantes.

During the six months of their internship period in a general medicine practice, these future doctors devote one day per week at the access to care consultationin conjunction with a university internship supervisor, active or retired.

Five new interns

Thursday May 2, on the La Roche-sur-Yon site, there were five new students to take over.

This is an opportunity for us to better discover polypathological patients.

In fact, “for these interns it is a unique experience of being made aware of a public in a precarious situation,” assures Francis Saint-Hubert, the director of the CHD.

Consultations for access to care also exist in Challans and Fontenay-le-Comte.

Patients are referred there by medico-social structures or social workers.

“The objective being that they will subsequently be directed towards city offices,” specifies Romain Bossis.

This device therefore makes it possible to bring medically wandering people back to care and participate fully in the prevention.

A project that we like, which comes from the region and is co-constructed in a lasting partnership between community medicine and the hospital.

Pierre-Emmanuel Carchon, interim director of the ARS

With the hope also for all of these actors that these initiatives constitute a real lever for the installation of young doctors in Vendéea department which still experiences a large deficit of health professionals.
