Heaven, our new messiah?

Heaven, our new messiah?
Heaven, our new messiah?

And as for the globalization of markets which is, as we know, through the transport it requires, a significant Source of pollution, how could our economic systems do without it? But fortunately, facing such a bleak future, a new ally has recently appeared on the horizon. This ally was discovered thanks to extraordinary advances in aerospace and astrophysics: the cosmos!

Believing himself to be the rich heir and henceforth becoming one with him, such will be the new messiah for today’s human beings. Enriched with the power of sciences which increasingly use planets and stars as models for solutions, humanity hopes to get out of it thanks to it.

How else can we understand the enormous amounts of money granted to NASA to explore space? For her and for all those who put their trust in this research, it can only be from there that the rescue of humanity will be achieved. This ranges from the search for water to the search for exoplanets capable of life somewhere in the cosmos. If our planet condemns us to disappear, the universe, in its grandiloquence, will surely save us.

After all, some believers will even add, were humans not created in the image of the creator of the universe? God cannot let us down. United with him in this sacred alliance with the universe, we risk nothing. We also find this idea widely developed by the Greco-Roman philosopher Plotinus (205-270 AD), for whom the creator of the universe and humans form one. From this feeling of unity with God, according to Plotinus, an elevation is inevitably created which is far above the concerns of the Earth.

Among the Christian mystics of the beginning of our era, this took the form of a state of ecstasy where nothing that happened around them here on earth could disturb their union with the creator. This was also, let us note, the particular state in which Bernadette Soubirous found herself in the 19th century during her 18 visions of the Virgin at Lourdes: absolutely nothing that happened in her surroundings could reach her in her happiness. . Smiling and with tears in her eyes, she stood before this lady who had come from heaven, seized with hope and indescribable happiness.

Isn’t it a similar feeling that explains the popularity of the solar eclipse of April 8 in North America? Because in the same way that admiration in front of the total eclipse blocked the light of the sun, in the same way it also blocked in consciousness all the fear usually felt in relation to the Earth which would condemn us to disappear.

Because astounded, the public no longer became one with the Earth, but with something much larger and more powerful than it: the sky with all the extraordinary resources it contains! Their eyes raised to the firmament and seized with a particular grace, it was for them a magical moment of osmosis with the universe.

While some are already preparing their trip to Spain to witness the next solar eclipse scheduled for 2027, we can however wonder in the face of so much enthusiasm. Can we simply recall here the journey undertaken by 30 followers of the Heaven’s Gate sect towards the comet Hale-Bopp in 1997. By freeing themselves from their bodies, they were convinced that from this celestial place, their souls could save humanity in distress.

And in closing, let us ask ourselves the question: isn’t current faith in aerospace somewhat excessive? While it is already manufacturing emptying satellites to clean space of all the pollution that it itself has created, we can seriously question the relevance and real value of the prospects of the future it offers. Is turning our gaze away from the Earth and giving our soul to the sky the way to follow in 2024?
