Flooding of the Senegal River: OMVS warns and calls for vigilance

In response to the heavy rains recorded in the upper basin of the Senegal River since August 2024, the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) published a press release concerning the management of the current flood. The Bafing, the main tributary of the Senegal River, has seen its water levels rise sharply, leading to the filling of the Manantali dam reservoir.

On October 3, 2024, the normal dam management level, set at 208.05 meters IGN, was reached. As a result, the dam operator began releasing water to relieve the holdup, causing water levels downstream to gradually rise.

The OMVS informs local populations, particularly those in the valley and delta of the Senegal River, that this situation could prolong the flood wave for several weeks. Although the releases aim to mitigate potential impacts, authorities are calling for vigilance, particularly in areas at risk of flooding.

The press release underlines the importance for residents of the areas concerned to take the necessary measures to deal with possible overflows of the river, especially as additional rainy episodes could increase the risks.
