Consistent, efficient on all terrains, the man who started motocross at the age of three and a half is currently at the best level of his career. So, on September 25, when he won his second national title, he was able to prove to everyone that he was the best driver in the Kingdom. “In 2022, in Battice, my first title was something exceptional because I had many close people by my side. I was not present in 2023 because there was a round of the world championship at the same time. So, being able to regain my title here is something special.“
Sixth in the world championship
Especially since when he was younger, Romain Kaivers did not expect such success. “When I looked at the other younger drivers, I didn’t see myself directly being able to beat them later. But now I realize that I can do it.”
What stands out about the 28-year-old pilot is his simplicity. However, the Braivois would have every reason in the world to get a big head. After five weekends in a row of racing in the different rounds of the world championship, Romain Kevers is in an incredible sixth place in the general classification. With, in particular, a fourth position during the Polish race. “I feel incredibly good. I achieved great results, and without a doubt my best season since the start of my career. I didn’t really expect such performances. But after all, I’m training well, the racing facts are in my favor at the moment and my life is going well. “
The last round in Mettet
As a symbol, the last round of the Supermoto world championship takes place this weekend in Belgium, near Mettet. If his great strength is undoubtedly his consistency, Romain Kaivers wants to be ambitious before his last race of 2024. “Mettet is special for me. I’m always looking to do something in Belgium, on this circuit. In the Supermoto round, I hope in any case to achieve a Top 5 and in the Superbike final later on Sunday, to enter the Top 10. All the best riders in the category will be present, so I will be happy with such a result.“
Afterwards, time for a well-deserved rest after a busy season. Because if the competition does not resume until March 2025, Romain Kevers knows that he will have to return to training much earlier. “And even though I love competing, five weekends in a row is really intense. We like it, but we’re also happy when the championship is over (laughs).”
“Doing better is complicated since I work”
When you are so close to the world podium, the first question you want to ask is whether it is possible to get on the box, the years and, therefore, the experience that comes with it passing by. But for Romain Kaivers, doing better than a Top 5 may be complicated. “I actually work in parks and gardens. It’s very physically demanding. Whereas, on the world podium, we only find professionals. The difference sometimes comes down to a second, but it’s a complicated gap to find.“Clearly, Romain Kaivers is one of the “best non-professionals”. A great mark of respect.
And can we hope that he can, one day, get that famous world podium? “I don’t really believe it. The best drivers in the world are really in front of me. To achieve this, I would need more training and again, when we see the ultra-favorite German at Mettet, we realize that the difference is big with drivers like him.“
