Alcohol at the heart of a public health study

Every year in France, health authorities attribute 41,000 deaths to alcohol. In order to refine public policies in this area, the Public Health France agency has just published regional data on alcohol consumption in 2021 and visits to emergency rooms directly linked to alcohol in 2023.

In Occitania, in 2021, 11% of adults aged 18 to 75 reported consuming alcohol daily. A figure down compared to 2017 (13.4%). In detail, 16.6% of men and 5.6% of women admitted to drinking alcohol every day. A figure which rises to 20.8% in the 61-75 age group. The study also aims to question residents of the region about their episodes of “heavy occasional drinking”, i.e. drinking more than six glasses of alcohol on a single occasion. 15.6% of Occitans aged 18 to 75 reported having experienced these episodes of excessive consumption in 2021. Among 18-30 year olds, this rate rises to 21.5%. Another important data for making a precise inventory of alcohol consumption: that of visits to the emergency room directly linked to alcohol. Here too, the numbers are decreasing. 0.71% of visits to emergency departments in Occitanie were due to alcohol in 2023, while this rate rose to more than 1% in 2017.

Even more locally, in the Lot, this rate rose last year to 0.98% for men (average in Occitanie: 0.94%) and 0.54% for women (0.47% in Occitanie). Data which places the department ahead of Aveyron, Hérault and even Aude.
