Villeneuve-sur-Lot. What is the “City by bike” label to which the bastide is applying?

the essential
As part of its program to promote soft mobility “L’Avenir à Vélo”, the Tour de France launched the “Ville à Vélo du Tour de France” label in 2021. And the bastide is applying to obtain it.

And this year, Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the entire region have put together a file to obtain this label. “Obtaining this label would reward us for what we have already done for soft mobility but also for the entire cycling plan that we launched in 2022 and which must end in 2030” explains Jean Ballouhet, manager in charge mobility and transport within the urban community, and therefore the cycling plan.

Whether rural or urban, cities applying for the label must highlight in their application all existing systems to encourage cycling, and present short and medium-term development plans locally (deployment of infrastructure, improvement of the safety of cyclists, learning with “Know how to ride a bike”, parking and the fight against theft, maintenance and repair, etc.). All these measures put in place contribute to the growth of cycling as a means of everyday transport, a Source of leisure or sporting activity. “Thanks to the preparation of this file and by carefully studying what is requested, we realized that we met the selection criteria” continues Jean Ballouhet. “Since 2020, the CAGV has implemented a major cycling plan across the entire territory, and in the Villeneuve region in particular. This has made it possible to really put things into perspective and have a better overall vision “.

A brief overview of the projects already underway and those that remain to be done

It is the road development which is the most visible. “Within a few weeks, the development of the cycle path which runs along the Agen road will be open. This development allows us to both welcome the Tour de France in the best possible conditions close to the line the arrival of the stage, but above all to secure this very busy route, frequented by high school students. Signs have also appeared for two-way bicycle traffic and the extension works of the greenway to Rogé. , then eventually as far as Penne-d’Agenais have started. In addition, we have started to change the bicycle parking furniture in the city center, but also at the swimming pool. And we work locally in this case. because this new equipment is manufactured in partnership with the Eysses detention center. For the third year in a row, the Greater Villeneuvois metropolitan area is reactivating the assistance system for purchasing a bicycle. Launched in 2022 under the name “Adopt a bike”, it takes the form of a bike voucher intended only for residents of the area who purchase equipment from local merchants. The check can range from 100 to 200 euros for the purchase of an electrically assisted bicycle. It is 50 euros for a “muscle” bike, excluding mountain bikes and racing bikes, and can be combined with other assistance devices.

Learning to ride a bike is also on the program. “The CAGV also intervenes in all primary schools with the know-how-to-ride-a-bike operation. The goal is for each student to be independent on a bike when they return to middle school. We are also setting up this system at the Malbentre aquatic center. We We will offer the students the opportunity to combine knowing how to swim with knowing how to roll. So, when they go to the swimming pool as part of learning water and swimming, it will be offered to them, after this session. water a session on two wheels We have also set up this cycling learning system for seniors. We work with the Maison des Aînés so that those who wish can start cycling again. let’s also set up service bicycles in the various municipal services. There is no point in taking a car for short distances if you have a bicycle available in one or another service. We are trying to change mentalities a little. to succeed in establishing a real cycling culture in people’s minds. We are only at the beginning of this adventure, and I am confident for the future. Obtaining this label is not an end in itself, but rather an opportunity to unite Villeneuvois around the idea of gentle travel, with adapted infrastructure.

The jury, led by Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, will deliver its verdict on May 15. So, will Villeneuve get a new label?
