In the footsteps of his father, an American sergeant who died in Moselle

Andrew Greene crossed the Atlantic to celebrate the death of his father, Sergeant Andrew Bob Candelaria who died in action during the Battle of the Seille in 1944 against the Wehrmacht, the name worn by the army of the IIIe Reich from May 21, 1935 and until its official dissolution in August 1946.

For the third time, Andrew Greene goes to his father’s grave, at the American military cemetery in Saint-Avold. The battle took place around Coin-sur-Seille 80 years ago, yet emotions are strong. Andrew Greene returns to to honor the memory of Sergeant Candelaria. A special visit since he is surrounded by his family.

Born in Alabama, in Birmingham, Andrew never knew his father. He was barely 4 months old when his father, Sergeant Candelaria fell in combat on September 20, 1944. Accompanied by two history enthusiasts and a translator, the octogenarian returned for the first time to the site of his father’s execution.

A day rich in emotion which allows us not to forget that the History of France is closely linked to that of the United States.

I don’t want Andrew Candelaria’s name to be forgotten. I want people to know his name and talk about this story. That’s why I came back, and knowing my age, it’s probably the last time.
