“I want us to stop portraying the image of a sector where impunity exists and where, in the name of old rifle traditions, we accept what we no longer accept elsewhere.” explained Frédéric Valletoux during a round table with the staff of this hospital of 3,000 employees.

Benefiting from a “equality label” awarded by the French Standardization Association (Afnor), this hospital center is one of the first in France to have implemented a multi-year action plan for its staff, medical or not, but also for its patients.

This ranges from compulsory training for all new employees to sympathetic consideration of maternity periods for medical staff to encouraging women to aim for positions of responsibility.

“The days of idiots at the hospital counter are over”

For female patients, the plan aims in particular to better take into account specificities linked to gender in diagnoses – a woman not presenting, for example, the same symptoms as a man in the case of heart failure – or even a multidisciplinary care for victims of domestic violence, which will be further strengthened next year with the inauguration of a “women’s house” near the hospital.

“I have sometimes had to take very heavy sanctions, including two revocations and seven temporary exclusions”, also underlined the general director of the establishment, Philippe Banyols. “The time of the idiots at the counter at the hospital, It’s over”, he added.

A representative of the interns stressed that it was always “very complicated” for them to “speak” to denounce abuses by medical professors who can decide their careers.

“There are blocking points, but we are not going to leave anything aside,” assured the minister, who should present in the coming weeks a national plan to combat sexual and gender-based violence, following ongoing consultations.
