Neuchâtel: the life annuity of state councilors is over

There will soon no longer be any canton in which members of the cantonal executive will receive an annuity until their death after leaving their post. The Neuchâtel Grand Council voted on Tuesday to end this measure, on which everyone agreed, except for a few details, as noted by “Arcinfo”. This new policy will only concern future members of the Council of State. Those who are in office or veterans who already receive a pension will continue to benefit from it as in the now future old system, which provides for a pension for life if departure takes place after the age of 50.

As compensation, the salaries of state councilors will increase slightly. Today it is around 240,000 francs per year, it will increase to 250,000 francs. And instead of a pension for life, ministers who leave the government before retirement age will receive a maximum of nine months of salary, calculated according to their seniority within the Council of State.

The majority of cantons have already abolished this system, which still remains in force for the Federal Council. Geneva and Friborg recently removed it. In French-speaking Switzerland, the cantons of Vaud and Bern are the last to grant lifetime pensions to their former ministers.
