Palestine: gathering and exhibitions for solidarity

The outpouring of solidarity with the Palestinian people continues in Vitry. Until May 6, the Vitry Cultural Center is hosting the exhibition by photographer Mohamed Zaanoun “Gaza, wounded childhood”. And on Sunday May 5, a large rally was organized at the sports palace to demand the release of Palestinian prisoners, in the presence of Franco-Palestinian lawyer Salah Hamouri, imprisoned for ten years in Israel.

May 5 at the sports center

This is the weekend event organized by the Palestine Emergency Committee with the support of the municipality taking place at the sports palace on Sunday May 5. From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., interventions will follow one another to demand the release of all Palestinian political prisoners. Salah Hamouri, Franco-Palestinian lawyer and honorary citizen of the city, will be present after ten years spent in Israeli jails. Recently expelled to France by the Israeli authorities, he filed a complaint for arbitrary detention and torture.

“By hosting this event, the city of Vitry reaffirms its support for the Palestinian people and its wish to finally see peace between peoples and humanity triumph,” explains Sonia Guenine, deputy mayor in charge of Solidarity. It is an important fight for the city which has two honorary citizens who were or are still political prisoners in Israel: Salah Hamouri who will be with us on Sunday, but also Marwan Barghouti, a major politician, nicknamed “the Mandela of Palestine”, who is still imprisoned…”

Two artists will host the evening: Abo Gabi and Nayra.

“Gaza the wounded childhood”

“Words fail me, I just want to cry!” Jamel says in a very small voice.

The words are difficult to find, the eyes are moist and the anger is suppressed, there is something to be said for it. The images of Mohamed Zaanoun, Palestinian photographer, exhibited at the Vitry Cultural Center (CCV) are powerful: “These photos are of a rare intensity emotionally and artistically very successful, which gives them even more strength,” explains Sabri.

“I discovered Mohamed’s work on the internet and I made a selection based on these photos of children. We are beyond journalism, words can be contested, not images!” explains Jean-Marie Boulet, documentary filmmaker at Choisy Films, at the origin of the exhibition with the local committee of MRAP, Art and Memory in the Maghreb, the Orlysian Committee of Solidarity with the Palestinian People and the Vitry Cultural Center.

“The smallest gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian people is important,” insists Ahmad Dari, former diplomat with UNESCO, calligrapher and Palestinian musician based in Vitry, before grabbing his oriental lute.

A round table including Mohamed Zaanoun by videoconference is organized on May 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the CCV, and Ahmad Dari will give a guided tour of the exhibition on Monday May 6 at 3 p.m.
