THE firefighters hard at work, this Thursday, May 2 at Perpignan. Firefighters were deployed to a fire in the early evening on rue Stendhal, in the Saint-Assiscle district, very close to the station. Although the flames destroyed several vehicles, they then caused a “flaming gas leak”describes the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of the Pyrénées-Orientales (SDIS 66).
A flaming gas leak
The alert was given to 7:30 p.m., this Thursday, prompting the intervention of around fifteen firefighters from the Perpignan North and Perpignan West barracks. According to information collected by News Perpignanthe fire apparently started from a two-wheeler, a scooter.
Very quickly, the flames spread to several other vehicles parked in the street, then to a garage and an exterior gas hydrant, resulting in “a flaming gas leak” and a high risk of explosion. The gas was cut off urgently by the supplier.
The fire of suspicious origin
At least two other cars were destroyed by the flames, but no injuries have been reported. Still according to our information, the origin of the fire is considered suspicious, and the criminal cause would even be considered. An individual was reportedly seen fleeing after causing the scooter to catch fire.
An investigation was opened and entrusted to the Perpignan police, to try to shed light on this fire which could have caused much greater damage.
