France Bleu Saint-Etienne Loire: When will traffic be able to resume between Châteaucreux and Lyon Perrache?

Daniel Bect, SNCF Réseau spokesperson: Traffic will resume normally on Monday morning. We organized ourselves, my teams were very responsive and efficient to achieve this objective. Following the incident, it was necessary to bring in experts, observe the reason for this event and take measures and carry out work so that the trains could run again in complete safety. I am really proud and proud of my teams because there is enormous momentum to upgrade the earthworks, the track. The teams work day and night. They take turns to achieve this goal.

It was necessary to clear the pile of earth, remove the polluted ballast and then also remove the train, which remained on the rails for many hours. That must not have made the interventions easier?

It was first necessary to carry out an assessment of the situation. We had to evacuate the earth. We are in a difficult to access area, which also does not make the task any easier. The replacement of the TER took time and it was necessary to organize the repair work because in this case, the ballast is polluted by the earth. So we have to place orders for ballast materials, sleepers and rails to renew the entire area as a preventive measure.

Can we prevent these landslides in the future? Three years ago now, in Rive de Gier, there was also a collapse of an embankment on the SNCF track. It had taken a long time. It was also necessary to intervene there. Are these things that you try to target in advance?

Exactly and you should know that the work in question was visited by my experts in January. There was no problem. That’s why we’re trying to understand what happened. Our embankment is ultimately not that high but the slope is very significant. Third parties and the road manager are concerned. So we have to observe, we have to study all of this to find out what happened and to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

How do you organize yourself to go and check this or that place which can be complicated?

There are regulatory visits, this is our core business. We inspect these works regularly. Beyond that, when there is bad weather, we make special visits to sensitive structures. In this case, it rained a lot. In 24 hours, a month of rain fell but this structure was not classified as sensitive and was not identified as a structure requiring special surveillance.
