“Without teachers, without lessons”: a new kind of computer science school opens in Rennes

“No teacher or lectures” is the promise of the Holberton computer science school, which is opening a new campus in Rennes on 3next June. This private education group offers training in the profession of IT developer, with specializations in virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, artificial intelligence and even cybersecurity.
If it can do without teachers, it is because its pedagogy “is based on two principles: “learning to learn” and “learning by doing”, explains the general director, Julien Cyr. We work in project mode, which promotes collaboration between students and teamwork. » The students are not, however, left abandoned, since they are notably supported by professionals and a referent called “student manager“.The Rennes campus, located rue du Pâtis-Tatelin, will be able to accommodate up to 70 students per year.

Now established in 20 countries, Holberton was founded in 2015 in San Francisco on the initiative of two French engineers, then gradually developed in the United States and elsewhere in the world. In France, where Holberton has joined forces with the Mayenne temporary work group Actual, the first school opened in 2021. There are ten today, including the one in Rennes, and others are in the pipeline in order to get closer to students and business needs. Companies which often compete for these developer profiles. According to Julien Cyr, between 35,000 and 40,000 are trained each year, but there are 350,000 unfilled positions.

At least nine months

At Holberton, three intakes are organized each year, in February, June and October. The training is accessible to everyone with or without a diploma, whether they have already done coding or not. The common core lasts nine months (with an optional internship) and can be extended by the same amount in the case of specialization (18 months in the case of work-study). Tighter deadlines than those offered by other schools, but Julien Cyr warns: the pace is high. “The common core lasts 1,300 hours but it requires a lot of investment from students, between 60 and 80 hours per week. »

In terms of price, count on €6,975 for nine months with, behind, integration into the job market facilitated by the school’s association with the Actual group. Globally, Holberton has an employment rate of 85% three months after training. In France, it is 100%, even if this figure only concerns a few dozen students who have graduated since 2023.
