Violent storms were forecast. They have caused at least one victim in recent hours. A 57-year-old woman died at her home inAisnein the municipality of Courmelles (1850 inhabitants), south of Soissons, after a mudslide triggered by these violent bad weather which crossed France during the night of this Wednesday 1er to Thursday May 2, 2024, announced the department prefecture in a press release.

An intense and very localized precipitation event caused a runoff and mudslide phenomenon. The phenomenon started around midnight.

“Her partner was also injured and transported to hospital,” added the prefecture, which refers to “an intense and very localized precipitation event.” The department was placed on orange alert for storms this Wednesday.

“A mudslide engulfed this area of ​​around ten homes and accumulated particularly in one house,” the mayor of Courmelles, Arnaud Svrcek, explained to AFP this Thursday, specifying that “the facade of the house” had “exploded”.

The man managed to escape, with bruises on his head, but the lady was carried away.

The water rose to more than 1m60 in the concrete block house built at the foot of the hill. The flow swept away everything in its path, leaving four gaping rooms on the street side and some shattered furniture on the road.

56 firefighters deployed in the town

The prefecture indicates that emergency services “rapidly intervened”, and that some 56 firefighters were deployed, as well as the gendarmerie. The prefecture specifies that the Courmelles town hall has “triggered its municipal safeguarding plan and set up a reception center for those involved”.

Courmelles has been affected several times in recent decades by mudslides, the latest in 2021. The town had however never experienced a phenomenon of such magnitude, explained the mayor, recalling that the soils are currently waterlogged after months of high precipitation.

These violent storms accompanied by hailstones and heavy rain subsided during the night, and Météo France has since lifted the orange alerts but is still maintaining many departments on yellow alert this Thursday, May 2, 2024, particularly for flooding.
