The Senegal women’s team will take part for the second consecutive time in the next African Cup of Nations (CAN), women’s in 2024. In an interview with Wiwsport, national coach Mame Moussa Cissé explained that the main goal of his team is to pass the first round.

After ten years of absence, the Senegal women’s team managed to participate in the last Women’s CAN of 2022, where the Seyni Ndir Seck gang lost in the quarter-final. Mame Moussa Cissé, the coach of the “Lionesses”, reaffirmed the main objective of his team during an interview given to Wiwsport with a view to the next CAN: “After ten years without participating in the African Cup, our first objective was to qualify in 2022 and return in 2024. Consequently, during the last CAN, we were not really expected, but we arrived in the quarter-finals. A World Cup appearance was narrowly missed. For us, the first step is to confirm. »

Before continuing: “We will already try to reach the second round, as we did during the last CAN, and from that moment on, we will no longer set limits for ourselves, everything becomes possible, but we will have to take it slowly, progress, because we have a young group, with many players aged 19, 20 and 21 who are discovering the competition. It is essential to give them the opportunity to improve in high-level competition, so it is necessary to take it slowly. First, let’s try to get to the second round, then from that point on we will set other goals in order to reach the highest possible level in the competition. »

He did not miss the opportunity to give his opinion on the possible arrival of new players: “Today, I went around Europe and I discovered some interesting profiles, so we will continue. The national team is not closed, it is never closed, it is open in both directions. Players who meet the requirements more will be selected and whenever we see players who can bring us greater value, it seems very obvious to me. The fittest players during the competition will be selected, whether in Senegal, France or Spain, because we have a few players there, a few tracks are also available in the United States. Currently we have a player who left for Italy some time ago, so we follow them all and then we will make the choices based on the balance of the team, the positions and the needs of the team,” he clarified.
